Booktalk: In the Dark City, there is one reality--survival. Outside the city's walls, the Horde of Unconsecrated lurk, trying desperately to consume whatever life remains inside. It is in this world that Annah waits. She waits for her death, hoping that she will not become one of the Unconsecrated when it happens. She waits for her friend Elias to return to her, or to learn of his death. She waits with the memory of her twin sister, Gabry, abandoned long ago in the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Then she meets Catcher, a mysterious stranger who is immune to the Unconsecrated. Can Catcher help Annah reclaim a life she thought was lost forever? Together, can Annah and Catcher escape the Unconsecrated, or will they find certain death along the way?
Ways the book can be used in lessons, with standards, or in the classroom, or other reasons you connected with the book: I connected with this book because I love all things zombies! The Dark and Hollow Places is the third book in The Forest of Hands and Teeth series. Annah, the protagonist, lives in a world filled with the Unconsecrated, an unrelenting force of death all around. Separated from both her sister and her love, Elias. Annah ponders the value of her life in a world where there is no release even in death.
This book would make a great independent reading selection for students who enjoy zombies or who already read zombies. As a librarian, I could use the zombie motif to hook students who enjoy The Walking Dead comics or TV show. Students who enjoy dystopia would also enjoy not only this book, but the entire series.
English teachers could use selections of this text in conjunction with philosophical texts about the value of life, as The Dark and Hollow Places explores the meaning of life in a hopeless world. English teachers could also use this text to explore the following Common Core standards:
